Needing additional information?
The DOT physical is a required step in obtaining a medical certificate to confirm you're medically fit to operate a commercial motor vehicle, as outlined by DOT regulations. Please note: this exam is not a substitute for a full annual wellness check or routine medical care.
Who needs a DOT Physical?
A DOT physical is required for any individual who operates commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). There are specific requirements that have been established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
However, to keep it simple - In general, if you have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or are applying for one, a current DOT medical certificate is required.
What is a DOT Physical?
A DOT exam (Department of Transportation physical exam) is a medical evaluation required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure that commercial drivers are physically and mentally fit to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle.
When do I need a DOT Physical?
You need a DOT physical if you are:
✅ Applying for or renewing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
A valid DOT medical certificate is required before you can get or retain your CDL.
✅ Your current DOT medical certificate is expiring
DOT medical cards are typically valid for up to 24 months, but most health conditions (like high blood pressure or diabetes) require more frequent evaluations.
✅ Returning to duty after medical leave or a disqualifying condition
If you've been off work due to a medical issue, a new DOT exam may be needed before you can return to safety-sensitive duties.
Why do I need a DOT physical?
You need a DOT physical to ensure you are medically fit to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The U.S. Department of Transportation requires it to protect your safety, the public, and the integrity of the transportation system.
Here’s why it's necessary:
✅ Safety
Driving large vehicles for long hours requires physical and mental endurance. The exam screens for conditions that could impair:
- Vision or hearing
- Alertness (e.g., sleep disorders)
- Heart health
- Mobility and coordination
- Drug or alcohol use
✅ Regulation Compliance
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires all CMV drivers in interstate commerce to pass a DOT physical and carry a valid medical certificate.
✅ Public Responsibility
As a commercial driver, you’re responsible for transporting people, goods, or hazardous materials—often across long distances. A DOT exam confirms you can do so safely and responsibly.
✅ Job Requirement
Many employers and state licensing agencies
won’t hire or certify drivers without a current DOT physical on file.
